Mathias Wenes studied biomedical sciences at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Leuven, Belgium. He obtained a PhD in 2016, from the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Leuven and the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology (VIB). He investigated the metabolic cross-talk between macrophages and endothelial cells in the hypoxic tumour microenvironment and its role in metastasis.

He then deepened his experience in tumour immunology by pursuing a post-doc on T cell biology at UNIL. There, he made two major discoveries linking metabolic pathways with epigenetic reprogramming in CD8 T cells driven by histone post-translational modifications. Both discoveries do not only shed light on metabolic processes determining T cell function and fate in infection and cancer, but also have remarkable translational potential in adoptive immunotherapy, a process that involves harvesting, modifying and reinjecting immune cells from cancer patients in order to fight the disease more effectively

In 2022, joined the lab of Prof. Denis Migliorini at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine as a post-doctoral researcher, and also became Chief Technology Officer in the start-up MPC Therapeutics, which develops solutions to improve the functional quality of CAR-T cells. Winner of a grant from the Max-Cloetta Foundation, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine. His lab focusses on the metabolic-epigenetic regulation of tumour-infiltrating immune cells, with the ultimate aim of enhancing the efficacy of adoptive cell therapy.
