Mathieu Brochet obtained in 2007 a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Trained in the field of pathogenic bacteria evolution, he later specialised in parasitology. With a fellowship from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and a "Marie Curie" fellowship from the European Research Council, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship from 2008 to 2014 at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, where he studied the development of malaria-causing parasites. In 2014, he joined the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM).

Recipient of a Starting Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), he was appointed Assistant Professor in 2015 at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ (UNIGE) Faculty of Medicine. There, he continues his research aimed at understanding the molecular and cellular determinants of the life cycle of malaria-causing parasites to develop new therapeutic strategies. In 2019, he received the Young Investigator Award from EMBO. Actively involved in faculty life, he is responsible for the first year of the medical bachelor's programme and the infection unit, and he leads the Faculty proteomics platform. He was appointed Associate Professor in 2020 and promoted to Full Professor in April 2025.
