“Meaning and Intentionality in Anton Marty. At the Crossroads of the Philosophy of Language and Mind” is supported by the . The project investigates the philosophy of language and mind of Anton Marty (Schwyz, 1847 – Prague, 1914). Its objective is to show the importance of Marty’s thought in the context of his time, but also the significance of some of his central ideas in the contemporary debates in philosophy of language and mind.

The project focuses on Marty’s theories of meaning and intentionality. The first axis of the project investigates Marty’s twofold notion of meaning (Bedeutung): i) meaning in the broad sense, or “communicational”; ii) meaning in the narrow sense, or “objective”. Understanding the relations between these two aspects of meaning will help to shed some new light on the connection between pragmatic and referential aspects of meaning in Marty’s philosophy.

The second axis of the project concerns Marty’s concept of intentionality, understood as an actual or potential relation of ideal similitude. It focuses on Marty’s use of the concept in his treatment of some of the central problems in philosophy of mind and language: the objectivity of meaning, the cognitive access to reality, the nature of universals, etc.

Regarding its scientific activities, the project evolves at different levels:

• Organisation of three international conferences (Prague 2014, Einsiedeln 2014, Geneva 2017) and numerous workshops;
• Publication of a series of articles by the members of the research team and publication of the proceedings of the international meetings;
• German edition of Marty’s lectures on philosophy of language (1904);
• French translation of Marty’s Untersuchungen zur Grundlegung der allgemeinen Grammatik und Sprachphilosophie (1908).

The research project “Meaning and Intentionality in Anton Marty. At the Crossroads of the Philosophy of Language and Mind” is hosted by Inbegriff – Geneva Seminar for Austro-German Philosophy.
