Prof. Roland Walter
Roland Walter obtained his doctorate in science from the UNIGE Astronomy Department in 1991. He then did postdocs at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (Germany), before returning to the UNIGE Astronomy Department as project manager for the INTEGRAL satellite data center in 1994. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in 2004. Roland Walter's research focuses on the nature of astrophysical sources accelerating very high-energy particles, the origin of cosmic rays, and the use of intensity interferometry to study accretion disks around compact stars. Since 2009, Roland Walter has initiated and contributed to the Swiss coordination of activities linked to the CTA Cherenkov telescope network project. His main responsibility is the real-time processing of data from all the telescopes (equivalent to 1 million CD-ROMs per night). He is also leading the construction of an instrument to image a black hole in visible light with a resolution of one billionth of a degree.
Author of numerous high-quality publications, Roland Walter participates in international conferences where his review papers are recognized by his peers. His activities have significantly strengthened the Astronomy Department's "Extreme Universe" research axis, consolidating the group's position among the world's elite.
Roland Walter was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Astronomy on August 1, 2023. He teaches at Master's level, introduces students to astrophysics and mentors PhD students on the path to scientific research.
