Apolipoprotein E is a major lipid transporter in the brain that ensures the survival of neurons by nourishing and detoxifying them. Some forms of apolipoprotein E, combined with environmental stresses and/or age-related alterations, influence the risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease.
