Erol is an econometrician and data scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Mathematical Modelling at the Institute of Global Health. He holds a Master of Science in Quantitative Economics, a D.E.A. in Econometrics, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Global Health track) from the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ. He teaches statistics and epidemiology in the MAS en santé publique at the Faculty of Medicine.

Before transitioning to global health research, Erol spent over a decade in finance as a quantitative analyst and financial risk manager, specializing in portfolio risk management and alternative investment strategies. He also holds the Financial Risk Manager (FRM®) certification.

In 2019, he joined the Institute of Global Health, where he applies his expertise in data science, econometrics, and machine learning to study infectious disease epidemiology. His research focuses on predicting HIV risk using socio-behavioral factors, identifying epidemic patterns, and developing machine learning models for disease surveillance. He has also contributed to COVID-19 epidemiological modeling in collaboration with WHO, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), and Geneva AV¶ÌÊÓƵ Hospitals (HUG).

Beyond epidemiological research, Erol developed LiteRev (literev.com), a web application that leverages natural language processing (NLP), large language models (LLMs), and multimodal retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to streamline literature reviews in scientific research. His work explores how these technologies can enhance information retrieval, document classification, and knowledge synthesis, improving accessibility and efficiency in systematic reviews.
