Separase: the molecular scissors of cell division
Sophia developed a fascination with proteins during her studies at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Basel, where she pursued a master's degree in Structural Biology. Beyond academia, she completed an internship at a startup company focused on protein-based vaccine platforms and gained experience in downstream processes at Novartis. As part of her PhD work under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Boland, Sophia is a member of the "separase" team, which aims to understand how this protein, a potential anti-cancer target and molecular scissor, functions through the use of cryo-EM, activity assays, and biophysical methods. In her free time, Sophia enjoys dancing, climbing, ski touring, and cycling.
