In 2006, Magdalena Kowalska obtained a PhD from the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Mainz on laser spectroscopy of short-lived magnesium isotopes. Between 2007 and 2009, she worked as a Marie Curie Individual Fellow in mass spectroscopy of radioactive isotopes at CERN's ISOLDE laboratory, before being elected Physics Coordinator at ISOLDE (2009-2015), which involved coordinating and liaising with 500 physicists and planning 50 scientific projects. In 2015, she was awarded an ERC Starting Grant on applications to the biological system of nuclear magnetic resonance detected by beta radioactivity. In 2018-2019, Magdalena Kowalska joins the Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics at UNIGE as Assistant Professor, then returns to CERN in 2020.
She currently leads or participates in projects dedicated to the use of polarized radioactive isotopes in fundamental physics, nuclear physics and applications in materials, biology and chemistry. She has obtained several European (ERC, FET-OPEN), national (SNSF) and institutional (CERN medical applications) grants. A new ERC grant will enable her to pursue and deepen the more fundamental aspects of her research. Magdalena Kowalska will be appointed full professor in the Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics in June 2023, and will contribute to the development of interdisciplinary research while improving scientific and institutional relations with CERN.
