Joël Ruch studied geology at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ before earning a doctorate from the GeoForschungsZentrum in Potsdam in 2010. Passionate about the deformation of active volcanoes and tectonics, he continued his research at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Roma Tre, focusing on the study of flank instabilities in various volcanoes and their recurrence. In 2014, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the King Abdullah AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, focusing on volcanic deformation and earthquakes in the southern Red Sea, Afar, and Iceland. In July 2018, he joined the Department of Earth Sciences at UNIGE as an SNSF-funded assistant professor, a position extended until June 2024.

Throughout his career, he has led numerous field missions in volcanic regions, including Iceland, Hawaii, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Argentina, and Chile. His research group, the VTLAB (Volcano-Tectonic Laboratory), focuses on studying tectonic and volcanic processes and their recurrence across different time scales. This research employs various methods, including satellite imaging, drone imaging, and field studies. He also developed an analog modeling laboratory to study geological processes, such as fluid circulation in fractured media, with potential applications in geothermal energy and mineral deposits. A key objective of his work is to identify magmatic and tectonic conditions preceding eruptions to enhance the ability to predict future events.

In parallel, Joël Ruch is involved in public outreach projects, including the development of the Terrascope and the organization of public exhibitions. In July 2024, he was appointed Associate Professor.
