Associate Professor

Astronomy Department

A Greek national, born in 1981 in Attica, Amaroussio, Greece, Anastasios Fragkos obtained his doctorate in science, specializing in Physics and Astronomy, in 2011 at Northwestern AV¶ÌÊÓƵ, USA. His dissertation was titled “Formation and Evolution of X-ray Binaries.” His scientific career has taken him to Harvard AV¶ÌÊÓƵ, USA, the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ. Since 2018, he has held the position of Assistant Professor at UniGe, following the award of an SNSF Professorship Grant.

Anastasios Fragkos is an internationally recognized astronomer for his research on the physical processes of interacting binary star systems, as well as the astrophysics of compact objects and gravitational waves. His research is distinguished by its quality and productivity, with over 80 publications to his name. He is a regular invited speaker at international conferences.

Mr. Fragkos is also noted for his excellent team management, exceptional research dynamism, and collaborative spirit. He is one of the six founding members and the vice-coordinator of the faculty center "Gravitational-Wave Science Center." He serves as the principal investigator and coordinator of the SNSF Sinergia project “GW-Learn: Deciphering the Gravitational Wave Universe Using Next-Generation Detectors and Machine Learning.” He is also the principal investigator of the international POSYDON project, bringing together over 25 astrophysicists and computer scientists. This project developed the only population synthesis code for single and binary stars that fully integrates the evolution of stellar structures and their interactions consistently using Machine Learning techniques. Additionally, he represents Switzerland on the “Scientific Representation Council of the Einstein Telescope (ET).”
