Editorial | From AI to Iceland: When Science Pushes the Boundaries

Dear Members, Friends and Supporters of the Faculty of Science,

As the end of 2024 approaches, filled with challenges and opportunities, science and innovation continue to play a crucial role in shaping our future. Major advances in artificial intelligence are transforming the way we work and interact, while debates on climate change, sustainable development, energy transition, public health, and technological ethics remain at the heart of global concerns. These discussions remind us of the fundamental role of science in supporting evidence-based approaches and decision making.

We are, therefore, very happy to dedicate, in this issue, an exclusive interview with Prof. Yann LeCun, Turing Award laureate and pioneer in artificial intelligence. During his visit to receive the title of doctor honoris causa at the 2024 Dies Academicus of the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ, he shared with us his fascinating vision of the past, present, and future of AI, offering invaluable perspectives on its role in society and academic research.

In this issue, you will also find a captivating report on the “Nuit de la Science” 2024, a flagship event that brings the public closer to our research community, transforming science into an experience that is both engaging and enriching. We also invite you to delve into the inspiring account of our Earth Sciences bachelor students, who traveled to Iceland to be directly exposed to the ongoing volcanic crisis that includes both the phenomenological and the human dimensions, demonstrating the richness of learning through experience.

We also continue to highlight the contributions of our dedicated members, whose efforts are central to advancing our community. We showcase key projects that reflect the diversity and depth of our Faculty and delve into the vision, mission, and core values that guide us. Additionally, we revisit 300 years of mathematics in Geneva—a celebration that united generations of researchers across disciplines to honor our scientific heritage. This milestone serves as a reminder that science, much like a grand fresco, is shaped by the collective contributions of visionaries and pioneers.

Through these articles, we not only celebrate the dynamism of our Faculty but also the impact it continues to have beyond our walls. I hope these stories will inspire you and strengthen your sense of community.

During this festive season, I extend my best wishes for happiness and serenity as the year comes to a close, along with my encouragement to approach 2025 with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

I wish you an excellent read and thank you for your commitment to bringing the ambitions of our Faculty to life.

With my warmest regards,

Prof. Costanza Bonadonna
