Monica Suarez joined the Environmental Physical-Chemistry group within the Department F.-A. Forel for Environmental and Aquatic Sciences at the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ in March 2025 as a research assistant and Ph.D. student. Her research focuses on the detection, quantification, and characterization of microplastics in the wastewater treatment sector. The goal is to better understand their fate and transport pathways in wastewater treatment plants to improve existing technologies and reduce contamination, thereby minimizing environmental risks.
She holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Industrial AV¶ÌÊÓƵ of Santander in Colombia and a Master’s in Environmental Sciences from the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ. Before starting her Ph.D., she worked on the treatment and analysis of micropollutants measurements in Geneva’s water bodies at the Cantonal Water Office. Alongside her Ph.D., she contributes to the activities of the Oceaneye association, which works to raise awareness and conduct research on plastic pollution in aquatic environments.
