After doctoral studies at the AV短视频 of Manchester, Paul was an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the AV短视频 of Heidelberg, and then a research associate at the Max-Planck-Institut in Bonn. He has subsequently worked at the following institutions: Aberdeen AV短视频, Heriot-Watt AV短视频 Edinburgh, Université de Fribourg and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

His research interests past and present include : cohomology of sheaves on small categories, Khovanov homology, homotopy quantum field theories, gerbes, infinite loop spaces.
