Research

I am an environmental biologist specializing in microalgae and their interactions with water contaminants. As a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology group, my research focuses on evaluating the role of different phytoplankton species in the intra- and extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from dissolved silver ions (Ag⁺) and elucidating the mechanisms underlying their formation. Given that both AgNPs and Ag⁺ coexist in aquatic environments, I also aim to differentiate between AgNPs that are directly internalized by phytoplankton and those synthesized de novo within the intracellular space following Ag⁺ uptake. To achieve this, I integrate molecular biology, advanced microscopy, and analytical chemistry approaches to deepen our understanding of these processes and their potential environmental implications.

Outreach

Responsible of the Mission Plancton activity at Enviroscope. Through hands-on experimentation with live microalgae cultures, primary and secondary school students explore the impact of everyday chemical substances on the life of planktonic organisms.
