In this study, antibiotic resistance genes were quantified in sediments from tropical rivers receiving hospital and urban effluents using real time PCR. The results facilitate improved risk assessments for the prudent use of antibiotics in human, animal and agriculture, and provide baseline information for developing strategies to limit the spread of these contaminants in Sub-Saharan Africa.
