In this talk I show that multiple wh-fronting can be optional. This goes against the standard description of multiple wh-fronting as obligatory (e.g., Bošković 2002). I will use Slovenian, a multiple wh-fronting language, to show that, in addition to moving all wh-phrases in a multiple wh-question, the strategy ‘move at least one wh-phrase’ also exists. I will further analyze this option and show that restrictions on movement that otherwise account for the lack of movement in other languages, cannot account for optionality of multiple wh-fronting in Slovenian. This implies that multiple wh-fronting is not always obligatory, as I will also show for other multiple wh-fronting languages (Serbo-Croatian and Czech).
