BEFORE THE STAY

1. When can I go on mobility?

3. I want to go on mobility but I’m not sure where to go. Who can help me choose my destination(s)?

Ìý

Ms. Isabelle de Vinck, exchange counselor, answers all questions regarding exchange programs (collaboration agreements, SEMP, Coimbra, Swiss mobility), destination choice, exchange duration, scholarships, administrative procedures, registration modalities, etc.

4. What is the procedure to apply for mobility?

Students must submit a complete application to the Academic Mobility Service of the AV¶ÌÊÓÆµ within the deadlines indicated on their website.

Generally, applications can be submitted from mid-October to the end of November of the current academic year for departure the following year.

All necessary information is available on the Academic Mobility Service website and the GSEM mobility page.


5. What documents are required for my mobility application?

In addition to the documents defined by the Academic Exchange Office, GSEM students must include:

  • Provisional mobility study plan(s) with precise course titles, codes, credits, and hours
  • Descriptions of all planned courses at the host university
  • Transcript from the first part of the Bachelor's and the latest transcript from the second part, if available


6. Who can I contact about my study plan or course choices at the host university?

The GSEM academic advisor is responsible for academic questions related to mobility, including course selection, equivalency recognition, and credit validation.


7. Who can I contact about my stay abroad, accommodation, visa, or host university?

Ìý

The Academic Exchange Office and your mobility advisor handle administrative questions. Once your destination is assigned, the program coordinator will contact you and serve as your official link with the host institution.

This person will be your contact from that point onward. They are the official link between you and the partner institution and will provide you with the information and support you need to compile your final application for the host university, including details on how to register with the partner institution, deadlines to meet, any scholarship payments, and answers to any questions you may have about your future or current mobility.


8. Can I take 33 ECTS credits during my mobility semester?

No, a maximum of 30 ECTS credits can be recognized, subject to any previously granted equivalencies.


9. Can I take 66 ECTS credits during my mobility year?

Ìý

No, a maximum of 60 ECTS credits can be recognized, subject to any previously granted equivalencies.


10. Is there a minimum number of credits that must be taken during mobility?

Ìý

GSEM does not impose a minimum number of credits to be taken abroad, but it is possible that the partner may impose one. In this case, you must comply with the partner's rules.


11. What is the difference between the GSEM mobility study contract and the MOVETIA learning agreement?

Ìý

The GSEM mobility study contract is between GSEM and the student, defining the courses and credits to be recognized.
The MOVETIA learning agreement is between the student, host university, and AV¶ÌÊÓÆµ, formalizing the courses to be taken.

The GSEM contract must be validated before signing the MOVETIA agreement.


12. How do I choose my courses for mobility?

Based on your study plan, calculate the remaining credits needed to complete your Bachelor's across the following categories: core mandatory courses, concentration mandatory courses, concentration electives (economics or management), and/or free electives.


13. Can I change my destination after receiving my mobility nomination?

Ìý

No, destination changes are not allowed after nomination. Contact your mobility advisor. The GSEM academic advisor is not responsible for this matter.


14. Can I change my semester after receiving my mobility nomination?

Ìý

This decision is up to the Academic Exchange Office. Contact your mobility advisor.


15. I don’t understand how to fill out my mobility study contract. What should I do?

Ìý

Read the mobility guidelines to help you complete the contract. Then submit it to the academic advisor atÌýmobility-gsem(at)unige.ch with detailed course descriptions.


16. What if my mobility start date overlaps with GSEM exam sessions?

Ìý

Submit an absence notice via the GSEM student intranet, including the host university’s academic calendar. You will be excused and retain your exam attempt.


17. My average is 4.45/6.00 after the first part of my Bachelor's. Can I go on mobility?

Ìý

No, the minimum average is of 4.5/6.00 to apply.


18. I still have exams from the first part of my Bachelor's but I am already taking second part courses. Can I go on mobility?

Ìý

No, you must complete the first part before applying.


19. I got a provisional destination place but failed one or more exams before my stay. Can I still go?

Ìý

It depends. If you are eliminated, your mobility stay will be canceled.


20. When should I prepare my mobility study contract?

Ìý

  • A provisional contract is prepared when applying.
  • A final contract is prepared after your destination is confirmed and must be validated before departure. Only signed and stamped contracts are valid.


21. Can I register for host university courses without validating my mobility contract first?

Ìý

No. Validation is required before course registration.


22. Can I take mandatory courses during mobility?

Ìý

Yes, if the courses are strictly equivalent to GSEM courses (subject, level, workload).
Detailed description of the courses must be submitted for academic advisor review.


23. Can I take concentration electives abroad?

Ìý

Yes, but they must be related to your orientation (economics or management). Equivalency is however not required.


24. Can I take free electives abroad?

Ìý

Yes, but they must differ from your orientation. Equivalency is not required.


25. Can I take language courses abroad?

Ìý

Yes, but language courses are not eligible for credit recognition by GSEM. In other words, you are free to take language courses at the partner institution, but these will not count toward your degree (no credits will be awarded).


26. What if host university credits don’t match GSEM ECTS credits?

Ìý

GSEM recognizes credits in multiples of three. If conversion doesn’t match, surplus credits may be recognized if close to a multiple of three.
This is assessed case-by-case and noted in the validated study contract.


27. What happens if I fail exams in Jan-Feb, May-June, or Aug-Sept?

Ìý

If you’re eliminated due to exam results, your mobility stay is canceled.


28. Can I cancel my mobility program?

Ìý

If you have a valid reason for not being able to participate in your mobility program, you must immediately inform the Academic Exchange Office Director and your GSEM academic advisor. The place allocated to you will be permanently lost.


DURING YOUR STAY


29. I would like to change the courses I initially chose in my study contract. Can I do so?

Ìý

Yes, up to one month after the start of classes at the host university.

For example, if the semester begins on September 15, you have until October 15 to submit your change request.

However, the partner institution may have stricter deadlines for changing courses, so check with them.


30. The courses I initially wanted to take are no longer available at the host university. What should I do?

Ìý

You must submit a new study contract proposal and contact your academic advisor to explore the options available to you.


AFTER YOUR STAY


31. My stay is coming to an end. What do I need to do to have the credits I earned abroad recognized?

Ìý

Students must ask their host university to send their official transcript directly, either by email toÌýmobility-gsem(at)unige.ch or by mail to the Student Services Department at the following postal address:

If the official transcript can be authenticated electronically, the student must send the electronic version to the GSEM Student Services Department, along with the instructions provided by the host university.


32. Will my grades obtained abroad appear on my GSEM transcript?

No, only the number of credits earned as equivalents will appear on the GSEM transcript.


33. Will the titles of the courses taken abroad appear on my GSEM transcript?

Ìý

No, only the number of credits earned as equivalents for the relevant course category will appear on your GSEM transcript.


34. The pass mark at my host university is different from that at the AV¶ÌÊÓÆµ. How are credits recognized?

Ìý

The grading scale of the host university is the one that counts. Once credits have been earned at the host university, they are also earned for the Faculty.

For example, if the host university considers that credits are earned with a grade of 10/20, the credits will be recognized as earned at the GSEM.


35. I would like to use my conservation credits for a grade obtained abroad. Can I do so?

It is possible to use conservation credits for a grade obtained abroad under certain conditions. Students must submit a request using the form within three weeks of the publication of grades at the host university and send it to the Student Services Department.


36. I would like to drop a course taken abroad. Can I do so?

Ìý

It is possible to drop a course taken abroad under certain conditions. Contact your academic advisor.


37. I failed a course taken abroad. Where can I retake it?

Ìý

You have the option of retaking the course either at the host university, provided that it offers a retake session, or at GSEM, under certain conditions. Contact the academic advisor.
