Stakeholders should be the focus of the Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of Swiss companies have the responsibility to ensure balanced and long-term oriented corporate governance. As research shows, this not only allows for a high increase in value, but also better preserves the company's existence in the long term.

The Swiss Code of Best Practice for Corporate Governance, while not formally binding, has recommended for years that the board of directors set the strategic agenda and strive for sustainable corporate development. Two things are crucial for successful stakeholder orientation: the right competencies of the board of directors and cooperation with the executive management.

The article is authored by the GSEM's Geneva Center for Corporate Governance members Honorary Professor Gilbert Probst, Ph.D. Student Alissa Bentele, and Dean Markus Menz.
