Human heritage: an ideal under threat?

The Environmental Governance and Territorial Development Department (GEDT) is pleased to announce a public lecture by Ms. Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO (2009-2017), to be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 12:15 p.m. at Uni Dufour (room U259).

Ms. Bokova played a key role in protecting and promoting world heritage during her time at UNESCO through her leading commitment to world heritage. In particular, she managed significant crises such as the withdrawal of the United States from the organisation, attacks targeting emblematic sites (Palmyra, Timbuktu) and the growing threats posed by climate change to cultural and natural heritage.

Her lecture will be entirely in English and accompanied by a detailed slideshow presentation, addressing the challenges UNESCO faced in protecting heritage and the current and future stakes in this essential mission. She will speak in a personal capacity, sharing her experience and vision of the future of world heritage governance.

After her remarks, the ensuing discussion will be moderated by Bernard Debarbieux, GEDT director and professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The open and dynamic exchange will be conducted in French or English, depending on conference participant preferences.

Le patrimoine de l’humanité : un idéal menacé ?

Le pôle Gouvernance environnementale et développement territorial (GEDT) a le plaisir d’annoncer une conférence d’Irina Bokova, ancienne Directrice Générale de l'Unesco (2009-2017), qui se tiendra le mercredi 5 mars 2025 à 12h15, à Uni Dufour (salle U259).

Avec son engagement de premier plan pour le patrimoine mondial, Bokova a joué un rôle clé dans la protection et la promotion du patrimoine mondial durant son mandat à l’Unesco. Elle a notamment géré des crises majeures telles que le retrait des États-Unis de l’organisation, les attaques ciblant des sites emblématiques (Palmyre, Tombouctou) et les menaces croissantes du changement climatique sur le patrimoine culturel et naturel.

Sa conférence sera entièrement en anglais et accompagnée d’une présentation détaillée en diaporama, abordant les défis auxquels l’UNESCO a été confrontée dans la protection du patrimoine ainsi que les enjeux actuels et futurs de cette mission essentielle. Elle s’exprimera à titre personnel, partageant son expérience et sa vision de l’avenir de la gouvernance du patrimoine mondial.

Après son intervention, la discussion qui suivra sera animée par Bernard Debarbieux, directeur du GEDT et professeur à la Faculté des Sciences de la Société. Cet échange ouvert et dynamique se déroulera en français ou en anglais, selon les préférences des participants à la conférence.
