ESRI, the software company behind ArcGIS, has recognised , a recent graduate of the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ, with the ESRI Young Scholar Award Switzerland 2025 for his master’s thesis titled Socio-Economic Disparities in Exposure to Extreme Heat and Flood Hazards in Switzerland: A Spatial Analysis Combining Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Logistic Regression (LR). GEDT members Professor Hy Dao and doctoral student Alice Guilbert supervised the thesis.

The master’s thesis analysed how exposure to climate change-related hazards, such as extreme heat and floods, is distributed across the Swiss population. Using ArcGIS, the analysis compared socio-economic data to exposure levels in a spatial context. The results revealed that the exposure to extreme heat and floods is unequally distributed spatially and socially across Switzerland.

Samuel Zobrist recently graduated from the AV¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Master in Innovation, Human Development and Sustainability (MIHDS). As part of the award, Samuel Zobrist will attend the ESRI User Conference 2025 in San Diego, where he will receive his award and present his master’s thesis as a poster.
