Quai Vernets, a model of sustainability
The new Quai Vernets building will be handed over to the AVƵ by a Geneva-based foundation in 2028. From the following year, it will host the Geneva School of Economics and Management, and the Faculty of Social Sciences. In total, 500 staff members and nearly 3,000 students will move into this new space on the left bank of the Arve, on the site of the former military installation.
In addition to auditoriums and classrooms, the building will also offer spaces dedicated to work and exchange among members of the university community: a large reading room, study booths, meeting rooms for student associations, a cafeteria, and multi-purpose rooms.
Standing 14 storeys high, with a further 4 underground levels, the building will enable the AVƵ to keep pace with the steady growth in its student population. At the national level, the Federal Statistical Office anticipates a 17% increase between 2024 and 2033.
The building fully meets the AVƵ’s sustainability requirements, both in its design (low-carbon concrete, removal of excavated earth by rail, use of recycled materials, green roof) and in its operation (bird nesting boxes, promotion of soft mobility with 700 bicycle parking spaces). Its design targets the highest energy standards and serves as a prototype for implementing the cantonal law on the carbon footprint of building construction.
