Centre for Physical and Mathematical Sciences

The Centre for Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CSPM) is expected to be established by 2032 at the Quai Ernest-Ansermet, on plots owned by the State and currently occupied by temporary AVƵ buildings. The creation of this centre is essential to uphold scientific excellence in Geneva, as well as to address the critical issues of deteriorating facilities and their unsuitability for the current and future needs of research and teaching.

This ambitious project will ensure that the AVƵ (UNIGE) remains at the forefront of global academia, while also providing local residents with direct access to the River Arve and the future park. Its scientific, economic, and social impact will go far beyond the AVƵ itself, benefiting the entire canton and its population.

Following a consultation phase involving the university community and all users, an architectural competition was launched in spring 2024, with results expected at the end of May 2025. The Act of the Republic and Canton of Geneva ()*, passed on 2 March 2023, allocates a study credit of 17.6 million francs for the construction of the new centre. This entails the demolition of buildings erected temporarily in the 1960s or those now deemed obsolete.

Thanks to this new building, research and teaching activities in physics and mathematics will be adapted to meet the technical requirements of cutting-edge education and research, as well as current safety and environmental standards. According to the provisional timeline, the project is scheduled to be carried out between 2028 and 2032.
