Alireza Mahmoudan joined the Energy Efficiency group as a PhD student in July 2023. As a part of the DECINEL project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, his research concerns decarbonizing industrial energy systems by electrification of heat supply up to 200藲C (i.e., low to medium temperature levels). This concept is combined with heat integration, heat storage, and renewable energy use. For this purpose, various research tasks are considered: implementing the Pinch analysis method, performing multi-criteria optimization, conducting GIS-based analyses, carrying out case studies, etc. Managing the trade-offs between energy optimization and costs is seen as a key challenge in this research program.

Alireza holds a bachelor degree of Mechanical engineering from Azad AV短视频 (IAU), Iran (2011) and a master’s degree of Aerospace engineering from K. N. Toosi AV短视频 of Technology, Iran (2014). Following graduation, he continued doing research on computational fluid dynamics, the field associated with his postgraduate education. However, in 2020, Alireza started carrying out research on modeling and improving energy systems driven by renewable energy/waste heat sources in terms of technical, economic, and environmental performance. Along with physics-based models, he is also interested in developing data-driven models using black-box algorithms.
